The five children represent some of the seven deadly sins from the bible.

The Children

AUGUSTUS GLOOP

  • Augustus represents the sin of gluttony. To commit the sin of gluttony, you over-indulge in food or drink excessively. Augustus commits this sin because he eats too much chocolate. His consequence: he falls into the chocolate river.

VERUCA SALT

  • Veruca represents the sin of greed. Greed is a sin of excess. Veruca always wants more. When Veruca doesn't get what she wants, she kicks and screams. In other words, she's a spoiled brat! Veruca's consequence is falling into a garbage chute.

VIOLET BEAUREGARDE

  • Violet Beauregarde represents the sin of pride. She is always bragging about being the best gum-chewer. She wants to win at everything. In the 1971 film, she ends up blowing up and the Oompa-Loompas are ordered to extract blueberry juice from her. The viewers are lead to believe that she exploded.

MIKE TEAVEE

  • Mike Teavee represents the sin of sloth. The sin of sloth refers to laziness. Mike is consumed by television. When he doesn't obey Wonka's rules about staying away from the Television Chocolate camera, he is shrunk.

CHARLIE BUCKET

  • Last but certainly not least is Charlie Bucket. Although the four other children represent what I think are obvious sins, Charlie's sin is a little more complicated since Charlie is the winner of the Chocolate Factory. The deadly sin which I think Charlie represents is lust.Lust is an intense desire, and I believe Charlie has that. He has a very strong ambition. The difference between Charlie and the other children is that he recognizes his fault and he apologizes for it. His confession allows him to win the grand prize. It's possible that Charlie can also be a Christ-like figure. He apologizes for giving into temptation which leads the "creator" to give Charlie full access to the factory.

"For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the pride of life, is not of the Father but is of the world."(1 John 2:16)

“Woe to the wicked! It shall be ill with him, for what his hands have dealt out shall be done to him.”(Isaiah 3:11)
